Former Today show co-host Lisa Wilkinson who turned down Channel Nine’s offer of $1.8 million for Channel Ten’s $2.0 million said that while she did it all for the greater good she would struggle on a $1.8 million salary.
“It was a very difficult decision,” Ms Wilkinson said. “But it was the only opportunity I had to make a bold statement about women’s pay rights and entitlements.”
Ms Wilkinson said there were financial considerations for why she made the move.
“With the prices of everything going up these days, I would have struggled on a $1.8 million salary.
“So that extra $200, 000 a year will certainly help pay the bills and put food on the table.”
Ms Wilkinson said that it saddened her that so many women refuse offers of higher pay for fear of looking greedy.
“I only hope women around the country are inspired by my courage and take those big bucks when they come their way,” she said.
